You call it being a nerd..I call it having a little passion
I dont think the term nerd has much relevance anymore. When I was in middle school only kids who played with magic cards and collected comic books we considered nerds. Computers were not very common (still to expensive) and nintendo was newly introduced. Video game nerds weren't heard of because only a few of my friends had them. I had one, on doctors orders. Now, everyone has a computer or two and most families have at least one gaming console. When people talk about being nerds they have to specify exactly what they are a nerd of be it books, gaming, blogging or pretty much anything.
I think as a society we have just replaced the word nerd with passion. Have you ever known someone to call themselves a book nerd and not really care about what they are reading or if you ask them what they are reading you will get a 20 min answer in full detail about it. If you asked me about my gaming I could tell you all about my toon in game, not that you would care, but I do.
I dont know where I was going with this it was just an observation.
