New York ...day 4!!
Its been four days and i feel like i know the city now :). If you know me you know how well i give directions and well i give directions way better then i can navigate things myself. I get lost all the time. Yes the streets are easy they have numbers but the ave. are another story. They should have just given them letters and made things easy, unfortunatly they did that in a part of town no one cares about.
We started off today early. It felt early anyways i just couldnt wake up for a good hour. I packed all of my stuff and moved it to storage and then we were off to Ground Zero. Pretty much it is just a big hole in the groun with alot of construction going on. There were signs up all over the surrounding fence that had all sorts of information about the survivors and those who didnt make it. There was also a table or booth set up behind the fence with a bunch of patches and other things pulled out of the rubble and set up as a sort of memorial site.
Its amazing how big the buildings were. Next time you are near a skyskraper you can pretty much double whatever you are looking at in highth and thats the size of one of the towers. Now imagine it falling. That would be one huge pile of concrete and glass. The videos that you see cant give you a good idea of it. When you are standing there at the site it is just a mind blowing vision.
After we walked around the site we just kept walking towards china town. I would have to say that New York gets more and more like disneyland and epcot the more i walk around. There are rollicoasters ( taxis and actual ones on coney island and other random parts there are feris wheels and meri go rounds), shows (everyewhere on broadway and off), and food/differnt cultures.
China town grew alot since 2001 when i was here last. I remember going down a few street last time but now its over 6 blocks. It surrounded and meshed with little italy. I guess that makes sence seeing as there are 10 asian nations and only 1 italy. There were tons and tons of markets. Ranging from fresh fruit, that looked really good, to fish and meat. We saw a panel van drive up to a butcher shop and just stop. The doors in the back opend up and just laying on the flat of the bed was a huge mound of what looked like lamb legs. Just piled up in the van and the guys just got out and started loading it into the shop. Needless to say i didnt buy anything from there :).
Did you ever wonder where to get fresh live frogs? Well china town has them and tons of fresh fish too. The crabs in the buckets were the coolest because they were just trying to crawl away and the guy kepts snatching them up and selling them to people. The whole thing was really cool. All the pungent and acute smells from china town made us not very hungry for chinese food. Plus the sanitations was a little iffy there. SO we were off to little italy.
I really enjoyed little italy as well. We stopped in shops and browsed around and i even bought an fake authentic Italy Jersy. It only cost me 20 bucks. That was pretty cool. We got over the smells of fish pretty soon after we entered little italy and our hunger returned so we stopped in a local joint and had a great lunch. Afterwards we just started to walk again and headed through all these places i cant remember the names of. SoHo, NoHo, G village, alphabet soup, and a couple others till we got to tired and hailed down a taxi.
Then while my mom got a manicure, my dad and i stood in line to get more tickets. We talked a bit about what we were going to get tickets for and in the end i won my dad over on the idea of seeing Sweeny Todd. I knew almost nothing about it but i had the vague idea that i saw a commercial for it once and liked it. Plus everything else that is good we had already seen. So I bought the tickets and we were off to pick up my mom and our luggage and then off to the new hotel and meet up with all of the choir people who were just getting into town.
When we got all of our stuff we realised we had a slight problem. We brought 1000 bags with us and it would take us forever to get 9 blocks with these bags. Mind you, in newyork going 9 blocks that are Street doesnt take but a mear matter of minutes, but going 9 avenues is a completely different thing all together, the blocks are much longer. No taxi cab driver in his right mind once to load up his taxi and take you 9 blocks. There is no money in it. Even though its a law that they have to take you if you ask them we saw five guys stop and then leave once we told them where we were going. Jerks!! So this hot girl on a bike with a little seat towing behind her says she can do it. We all wouldnt obviously fit on the seet so we loaded my mom up with all the bags and let her go while we walked carrying the few bags we couldnt fit with us. Loading up my mom on the cart was the funniest thing i have seen in a long time. What made it even funnier was watching the pour hot chick try and tow all the weight we had just loaded her with. Me and my dad laughed the whole time we were walking i wish i had taken a picture.
This trip has also taught me alot about myself when it comes to taking pictures. I dont do it. I dont like lugging around a digital camera. I dont even like taking my wallet but i figure thats a must. I def am not carrying my phone. So if you wanted to see pictures of this trip or i said i would take some i am sorry but thats just not happening. If you want to know what went on at a certain point ill try and describe it for you but thats about as best as you are going to get.
You may have noticed by now that i have not mentioned anything about, the statue of liberty, the empire state building or elise island. Thats because those are the stupidest things to go see while you are here. I promise you they look just like they did in ever picuture you have ever seen or movie. The empire state building is cool though, just dont ask anyone to marry you up there because that is romantic but way over done be original. Replaying your favorite scene from sleepless in seatle is also lame.
Where was i when i got off track? Oh yes, so we get our luggage into the new hotel which is the grand Hyatt and is supposed to be super classy. I think its just a big waist of money if you ask me but i didnt plan the trip. So our new hotel room is very nice but farther from Time Square and the theater district so it just means more walking for me. Once we got settled in we headed down to the theater and on the way stopped by Rockifeller center and looked at the fountain and whatnot.
Sweeny Todd
This show had the most impressive cast in all the musicals i have seen so far. The show was done with only 10 members and NO ORCHISTRA. The actors played all the instruments on stage!!! So not only could they act and sing but everyone in the cast played at least 2 or 3 instraments. There voices were amazing and they could play as well as sing and act there part, just amazing. The stage never changed props but they did move things around between scenes. It was very cool.
The show is a dark comedy about a barber who is a cut throat killer. Paying revenge for what happend to him. Ill try for a second to explain what the show was like. It is like a film noir, Lucky Number Sleven. They show you the ending and then everything happens and in the end you go, AHHHHH so that what that meant. If any of you have ever seen Into the Woods, it is another musical. The singing is much like that. One person will start a song and then another will join but what they are singing about has nothing to do with what the other person is saying. Sometimes it does most of the time it doesnt. Then a third will join in the song and you have to listen to all of them and what they are saying. The harmony is amazing and the words were easy to pick out because the diction from the actors was presise and crisp.
I left the show once again in awe. I LOVE BROADWAY!!!
On the way home we stopped at a rays and got some pizza. My legs at this point are like rocks and need to relax a bit so we head to the hotel and here i am writing. Tomorrow i will spend most of my dad in rehersal and then hopefully another show. Ill write more when it happends. good night.
You stay classy san diego.
